Journey: Columbus to Harlem

A PHOTO JOURNAL

A light breeze brushed the porch of the MPACC Shipping Container Gallery, gently rocking the hanging prints back and forth as people meandered between the photographs on Thursday, August 23.

The container documented a journey in images. It traced the path of five local, Columbus artists as they traveled from their hometown to Harlem, New York. That journey was more than a road trip. It was an opportunity for local artists to experience the rich historical and physical ties between Columbus and Harlem.

The photographs in that gallery — shot by Marshall Shorts and Yohannan “Yogi” Terrell — precede a five-part documentary series, which will be released in the coming weeks. Each segment will follow the journey of one of the Columbus-based artists.

In other words, Thursday’s event was a beautiful beginning.
